Lomography Contest Follow Up…

I have a youhatetoloveit relationship with my Lomography Mini Diana. About a year ago I was browsing Facebook to see a post by Vibralux that they were having a photography contest in which the grand prize was a Lomography Mini Diana. Being an aspiring photographer I decided to send in a photo of a Lego man holding a matchstick in one hand, and the fuse of a small firecracker in the other, that I had shot 3 years prior to this post. I never really expected to win much less receive any recognition for my photo. I checked Youhatetoloveit.com and Facebook daily to see when they would announce the winners. Upon arriving home one night from my local bar/hangout Elloit’s Revue completely hammertime from drinking one too many PBRs, I had received an Email from Adam Johnson with a subject line that simply read “You won! Go’on and brag about it”. I was super stoked on the win and excited to be one of the three recipients of my very own Lomo Mini Diana. A week or so had passed and I stayed posted up on my front porch with several cases of Miller High Life waiting to see a delivery truck come rollin’ through my hood. The day it arrived I was so hyped to get to work and shoot some photos. First on the list was a trip to the local photo store to pick up some rolls of film so I could get started. After buying a 4 pack of 200 speed film, I sat down with my awesome new toy and it’s instruction manual. Trying to load the film into this camera is slightly complicated for someone who has never really dealt with film before. Once I correctly loaded the film into the camera after breaking one roll of film, it was “go time”. I cruised out into town to try this new camera out, unknowing that I was soon to become addicted to my new “toy”. The controls of the Lomo Mini Diana are very simple, a switch for “sunny/cloudy” mode, a switch for single frame/half frame photos, a switch for single shot/bulb mode, and a shutter switch. Hopping around from bar to bar and shooting photos of my travels I quickly realized that this camera is a total “social magnet”, everyone wants to ask questions about it which quickly turns into meeting a new friend and taking a picture of them. A girl I once took a photo of grabbed the camera to see the preview on the back thinking it was a digital camera and had one of the most confused looks on her face upon realizing that there is no screen to preview the photos on, that really made me laugh. After a while I began to feel like that one Comedy Central show “Dave Attel’s Insomniac”. Once I finished several rolls of film, it was time to get them developed. As a new film camera user, I was real excited to see what would come out of the photos I had taken. Upon reviewing the photos I took, I was real surprised to see the dreamy and grainy effects of this camera, and not so excited to see a lot of photos that didn’t quite come out the way I had expected. Frustration was a recurring emotion due to breaking film and screwing up a ton of photos due to not winding the film properly, but on the other hand, when I did forget to wind the film it always resulted in double exposures which some were awesome, some not so awesome. Anyways, playing with this camera in the last year has been a lot of fun and at the same time, a giant pain in my ass, but I will continue to stick with it and continue spending a good portion of my money on buying and developing my film even though it cuts into my drinking funds. A ton of props go out to AJ and the VX crew for hooking me up with this camera, I really appreciate it. Stay Drunk.

Filmed between April 4 and April 11, 2011, the individual frames were shot using a Canon 5D Mark II with a Canon 17mm TSE, Canon 16-35mm II, Canon 24/1.4II, and Sigma 12-24mm.
